Human rights

With most goods being transported by ocean, Holcim Trading & Shipping knows that our industry’s practices have a significant influence on global supply chains.

We take a rigorous approach to human rights. Our due diligence spans company practices, procurement policies and supplier networks to ensure our practices uphold human dignity.

Facilitating trade while protecting rights

Human rights are not a secondary aspect of trading and shipping. They are integral both to our industry’s purpose and to many of its core activities. Transport and logistics enable the flow of essential goods and services that facilitate many of our fundamental non-material needs like health services, education and employment.

Because our industry relies on a vast network of facilities, vessels and intermediaries to deliver vital goods, our primary operations rely on many workers in communities around the world. Each link in our value chain represents an opportunity to protect human rights for our employees, our communities and our network of stakeholders.

In trading and shipping, protecting people is foundational to delivering value responsibly and creating trust across global commerce.

How we put people first

At Holcim Trading & Shipping, respect for human rights is integral to how we work. We ensure dignity and fairness are upheld across all of our operating markets.

We conduct rigorous screening of all vessels under our Corporate Shipping Policy. This includes reviewing compliance records, operational feedback and vessel ownership profiles to ensure we only work with responsible operators.

These values extend to our supply chain. We are increasing visibility in high-risk areas and hold our partners to the same standards because we consider human rights as non-negotiable. They are essential to resilient and responsible shipping.

Our commitment also includes responsible sourcing. We follow a strict sustainable procurement policy that incorporates environmental and social due diligence. This ensures the materials we trade are sourced ethically and with care.

This focus on sustainable procurement is how we translate our values into action, protecting people and the planet at every step.

Holcim’s sustainable procurement principles

The standards and principles governing sustainable procurement at Holcim are based on:

  • The UN Global Compact Ten Principles
  • The OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises
  • The UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights
  • The International Labor Organization’s Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work

Our Supplier Code of Conduct, Procurement Policy, Sustainable Procurement Directive and Workers in the Value Chain Directive govern Holcim's approach to deploying responsible business practices in our supply chain.

We set high health and safety standards in the shipping and trading industry by setting systems and controls in place to ensure zero harm.

At Holcim Trading & Shipping, we’re committed to decarbonizing maritime logistics and reducing environmental impact across our operations.
