Holcim Trading & Shipping meets 2024 IMO climate goals

Shipping accounts for 90% of all global trade. However, while it is a significant contributor to global GHG emissions, it is also among the most efficient forms of transport, compared to road or air transportation.

Although our contribution in the overall CO2 emissions of the global shipping industry is small, Holcim Trading & Shipping is a strong advocate for sustainable maritime operations. Our Sea Cargo Charter (SCC) membership helps us realize our commitment to carbon transparency and the overall decarbonization of the industry.

The SCC sets the framework for assessing and disclosing the climate impact of ship chartering activities worldwide. This sets the baseline for sustainability to enable both charterers and shipowners to measure their activities and limit their environmental impacts in a responsible way.

Our key takeaways

According to the SCC’s revised decarbonization trajectories, our climate alignment score improved in 2024 compared to previous years. This achievement is thanks to our decarbonization efforts and collaborations with other stakeholders in the value chain.

The SCC provides us with a robust framework for collecting, tracking and disclosing CO2 emissions. Since our first SCC climate alignment report in 2022, we have advanced our data management and analysis of our CO2 emissions. With this data, we have identified gaps in our sustainability efforts, such as long ballast legs or underutilized vessel capacity.

We continue to leverage these findings to implement on-going decarbonization initiatives and engage our shipping partners in a joint effort towards more sustainable shipping.

We aim to further our efforts to reduce CO2 intensity and improve our results in 2025.

Our 2024 climate alignment results (2025 Annual Disclosure)

“The improvement of our climate alignment score is a direct result of our collaborative efforts at Holcim and our commitment to meeting the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO’s) ambitions. Collaboration between all stakeholders in the value chain and a focus on maritime decarbonization efforts is key to a sustainable maritime future.”
